The Gist of “Baking Memories: A Sweet Farewell”
- The girls are leaving for an eleven-day holiday tomorrow; how will I cope?
- They decided to make a birthday cake for their dad, with Ruth helping them through the process.
- Evie carefully cracked the eggs, and both girls took turns mixing the batter and buttercream.
- Watching Evie’s growing independence made me realise how quickly they grew up.
- The cake will be finished once they arrive on holiday, and the components will be kept separate to avoid any travel mishaps.
- Evie and Maisie licked the mixing bowls clean, leaving little need for washing up!
Tomorrow, the girls are off on their holidays—eleven days away. Can I cope without seeing them? I suppose I’ll find out soon enough. I should mention that it is their daddy’s birthday on Saturday, so they want to make him a cake today. That’s where Ruth came in.
Evie cracked the eggs, carefully breaking each one, trying her best not to let any shell slip in. Then came the mixing, each taking turns creating the sponge mix, which led to the fluffiest cake imaginable. Next came the buttercream; their mixing created the smoothest, chocolatiest buttercream. And it tasted fantastic, the girls giving Ruth advice about when the flavour was just right! Obviously, Ruth helped a bit!
Watching Evie crack the eggs reminded me of how fast she is growing up; now, she can reach the workspace using only a small step rather than a chair—Maisie still needs a chair. It wasn’t long ago that they were learning to hold a spoon, and now they are almost entirely baking a cake. It’s moments like these that make me wonder where the time has gone, and I find myself missing them even before they’ve left.
For now, though, there’s still a cake to finish and two little girls too eager to surprise their dad with the perfect birthday treat. However, this will not be done until they arrive on holiday. The buttercream and three cake sections are being kept apart for a day longer to avoid a mishap while travelling.
But what about the whisks and the bowl for mixing the chocolate buttercream? Evie and Maisie took care of these, licking them so clean that I wondered if they even needed washing!
